In August, the MAFC technical representatives and their partners met in Minneapolis, Minnesota for the MAFC Annual Meeting. For the first time, the meeting was held in partnership with the MAASTO Annual Summer Meeting. This, in part, was intended to provide increased integration of the freight activities of the states and the Coalition with MAASTO activities. It also served to increase awareness and the institutionalization of freight development within the DOTs.
As shown in the agenda, the meeting began with a MAFC workshop on Monday afternoon where MAFC staff summarized the last year’s efforts and sketched out a trajectory for the upcoming years. The majority of the workshop time was spent on state-to-state discussions where each attendee talked about the big projects, successes, and issues they are working through in their agency. A summary of the state-to-state discussions is provided below. Slides from presentations given during the MAFC session and freight-related presentations are available below.
MAFC would like to thank MAASTO and the MAASTO Planning committee as well the state MAFC technical representatives for the continued support and participation in the Mid-America Freight Coalition. The Coalition also wishes to thank SRF and Quentica for their support of MAFC events at the MAASTO meeting.

MAFC Tour: Mississippi River by Barge
The Twin Cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul have long benefited from their strategic location on the Mississippi River. Important for both recreation and industry, the river has played a vital role in the region’s history. This tour focused on the river’s importance to freight, letting MAFC members view the river from a barge, while learning about the important shipping activities that occur along the shore and on the water. Following the tour was the MAFC annual dinner, taking place this year at Union Depot in downtown Saint Paul.
